What exactly is Adventure Unlimited?

Adventure Unlimited is a non-profit Christian Science organization that was founded by John “Cap” and Marianne Andrews in the 1950s. The organization was founded as a way to ready young men physically, mentally and spiritually for the world they were entering as adults. It quickly expanded to include young women as well. Because of a growing interest in year-round activities, Adventure Unlimited expanded again in the 1960s to include a field program with chapters around the world that offered young Christian Scientists and their families a way to stay connected and engaged year round. This program is now called DiscoveryBound. Today Adventure Unlimited continues to offer its two distinct program areas – A/U Ranches and DiscoveryBound – through which are provided a variety of activities, events, and programming.

Is Adventure Unlimited the same as the A/U Ranches?

Adventure Unlimited is the parent name for the entire organization. Its two main program areas include the A/U Ranches and DiscoveryBound. The A/U Ranches, located in Buena Vista, Colorado, are a cornerstone of our programming. The supportive and inspiring atmosphere cultivates confidence and develops moral courage for Christian Science youth, adults and families. Activities are offered year-round, including a community outreach program, the 100 Elk Outdoor Center, which serves those of all faiths and economic diversity. The A/U Ranches’ staff lives on property in the Rocky Mountains.

Is DiscoveryBound affiliated with the A/U Ranches?

No. DiscoveryBound is one of two distinct program areas Adventure Unlimited offers. The other program area is the A/U Ranches. While all of the Adventure Unlimited programs ultimately operate under the Adventure Unlimited Mission, Vision and Purpose statements, each program area operates independently of the others. DiscoveryBound has its own staff and holds events around the country and abroad from its offices in the Greenwood Village, Colorado headquarters, just outside of Denver.

What type of events does DiscoveryBound offer?

DiscoveryBound is a year-round program for adults, families and friends of all faiths that provides inspiring recreational, leadership and service activities on local, regional, national and international levels. It creates an atmosphere where individuals experience Christian Science in action. It is composed of DB Outreach, DB National Leadership Council (NLC) and DB Compass.

  • DB Outreach – “reaches out” beyond camp and church to invite those of all faiths to attend local, regional and national events where participants experience Christian Science in action.
  • DB National Leadership Council (NLC) – a four-year servant leadership program for Christian Science high school students, dedicated to fostering spiritual growth, leadership qualities and a service approach to life.
  • Compass – a one-year opportunity for Christian Science teens in high school, focused on spiritual exploration and connection with Christian Science peers.

What are Adventure Unlimited’s Community Standards?

Statement of Community Standards
“The divine demand, ‘Be ye therefore perfect,’ is scientific, and the human footsteps leading to perfection are indispensable. Individuals are consistent who, watching and praying, can ‘run, and not be weary; . . . walk, and not faint,’ who gain good rapidly and hold their position, or attain slowly and yield not to discouragement. God requires perfection, but not until the battle between Spirit and flesh is fought and the victory won.” – Science & Health 253:32-8

As an organization that serves a broader Christian Science community, Adventure Unlimited (inclusive of DiscoveryBound) expects its staff and volunteers to strive to live the highest moral and ethical standards. Adventure Unlimited believes the following standards support an environment focused on spiritual growth and healing. I am willing to maintain these community standards on all of the following points.

  1. As a staff member or volunteer for Adventure Unlimited, I understand I am a role model for others and will be working closely with children and adults to support their and my own growth in Christian Science through various activities and events.
  2. I am an active student of Christian Science. I strive to live in accordance with its teachings and to demonstrate its principles daily, including utilizing it for health care.
  3. I will maintain elevated thought and speech in my own conversation and with those around me.
  4. I am free from the use or possession of tobacco, marijuana, alcohol, illegal drugs of any kind and sexual activity outside of marriage.
  5. I will express divine Love and be inclusive of all participants, volunteers and staff.
  6. I am committed to contributing to an environment focused on supporting each individual’s understanding of his or her relationship to God and to holding myself, my peers and supervisors accountable to these standards, by utilizing the spirit of the Golden Rule (Matt. 7:12) and the Matthew Code (Matt. 18:15-17). (Science & Health 497:26)
  7. I am a member in good standing of either The Mother Church (The First Church of Christ, Scientist) and/or one of its branch churches, or am in the process of joining one or both. (For full-time staff, NLC Leaders and Compass guides.)

What is the Adventure Unlimited – DiscoveryBound Foundation?

In a non-profit environment, donations are crucial to the short term operations as well as the financial longevity of the organization. The Adventure Unlimited organization operates solely on donations. The A/U – DB Foundation is the fundraising arm of Adventure Unlimited. The Foundation is staffed by business professionals who are educated and trained to work with donors and to keep the Christian Science community informed of the successes and needs of Adventure Unlimited. The Foundation works closely with the Board of Trustees to ensure all funds are being allocated and used efficiently and effectively for their allotted purposes.

What is the Bridges to the Future Campaign?

A decade ago, Adventure Unlimited undertook its first capital campaign to update our facilities and expand programs. Today, as we emerge from an era of seeming economic challenges, there are new opportunities to refine our programs to better meet the needs of today. It is a large undertaking that we feel is worthy of a focused effort. This particular Campaign addresses facility and infrastructure needs, plans and builds for the future, and generates resources that will sustain programs and support young Christian Scientists desiring to attend our programs and activities. Please view our Campaign pages for more information about this important initiative and how you can help.
