Special Majors

Special Majors are offered to give Round-Up campers an extra challenge and an exciting taste of backcountry living. Campers with a bit of camping experience (any previous A/U summer program works!) can apply to venture out with a small group of peers on one of these extended trips in Colorado's back

country

Session 1 - Photography:
If you love fine arts and photography or have wanted to learn more about them, this is the major for you. Staff will guide participants through a digital photography program that includes equipment use, artistic theory, downloading, cropping and editing, slideshows, etc. Fine arts will focus on sketching, watercolor and oils. The three-day trip will go into some truly spectacular high mountain areas for art and photography.

Session 1 - Road Biking:
Colorado has some of the finest road biking in the country with high mountain passes, spectacular vistas, and winding canyons. Come join us for two weeks of work on individual riding skills, road riding safety clinics, peloton techniques, team strategies, stage rides, and a four-day vehicle-supported tour around the Rockies to cap it off.

Session 2 - Mountain Biking:
A camp-based mountain biking major. We will start on easier trails building skill and fitness and work our way up to harder trails like the Mount Princeton classic. The three-day overnight will take us along beautiful trails in Bassam Park while a truck hauls the gear to our next camp. Bring your own bike or rent one here. It will be a lot of fun!

Session 3 - Whitewater Kayaking:
Have you ever wondered what it felt like to really work with the currents of the river or wanted to learn how to surf on one of those big, green, glassy waves in Brown’s Canyon? If so then our whitewater kayaking program is for you. We will start with instruction of strokes on the lake, and rolling lessons in the pool. Then we will progress to more moderate sections of the Arkansas River like the Milk Run, focusing on learning how kayaks move in the current and through whitewater. By the end of the session there will be opportunities to learn freestyle kayaking and surfing in Brown’s Canyon and at the Salida surf hole. Good fun! Please plan on some additional charges for gear rental.
