Exploring Southern Patagonia
November 29 December 13, 2008
|
This expedition takes us to the "end of the world" to explore the wild landscapes and unique communities of southern Patagonia - including Torres del Paine National Park in Chile and Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina. The centerpiece of the trip will be your choice of either a 6-day backpacking journey along the spectacular "W" route in the Torres del Paine NP OR a 6-day horse trip across the adjacent Patagonian grasslands.

Backpackers will sleep and eat in backcountry "refugios" along the route, and riders will stay at historic "estancias" (ranches) each night. Both choices require a high level of fitness and experience, and applicants will need to show a solid level of background and preparedness in order to qualify for the program. We will finish the program with a visit to the Argentine town of El Calafate, where we will see one of the most dramatic glaciers in the region, "Perito Moreno", and enjoy a couple of relaxing days in Los Glaciares NP. |
Expedition Leaders: Dr Gary B. Fleener
Gary, a veteran expeditions leader, has spent many years teaching mountain culture and ecology and leading travel groups.
Physical Readiness: This program requires a high degree of physical fitness for the backpackers and a solid background in horsemanship for the riders. Backpackers must be able to carry their own personal gear (~20 lbs) and hike 10 miles/day on good mountain trails. Riders must be confident on full day rides across the wild Patagonian landscape. Evacuation during either the backpacking or riding will be extremely difficult.
Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received, but all applicants will be required to complete a brief phone interview with the expedition leader prior to formal acceptance on the trip. This formality is meant to be a protection to all, and applicants are kindly requested to accept the results of the process, knowing that we are trying to ensure that the program is a good fit for each and every participant.
Price: (Current program estimates)
Backpacking - $3,899 Horseback - $4,899
Does not include international airfare to Santiago, Chile.
