I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to co-lead the 2014S NLC Class. It’s hard to imagine anything more important than supporting our Christian Science youth in their efforts to make a significant difference in the world. Although I always loved Christian Science growing up, two specific Christian Science camp experiences transformed my life for the better, so I know how crucial these teen years are in solidifying our understanding and appreciation for Christian Science. One involved hearing God’s direction so clearly during a solo hike I was absolutely sure I was not hiking “solo”. The second was helping get our entire group to the top of a “fourteener,” including one member who could barely hike out of camp. Although I had grown up very competitive in athletics, that victory far exceeded any win I had ever experienced. Because of this, when I returned home I was now far more committed to helping others rather than beating others. It was also clear our group could not have accomplished this without unselfish teamwork and seeing our strength and stamina as coming solely from God.
Most of my career has been spent teaching either high school or junior high science. I took a few years off from teaching and worked as the Events Manager for DiscoveryBound planning their national events. Although that was an amazing experience I felt called to be back in the classroom as well as be able to coach again and live closer to family. I currently teach junior high science at Berkeley Hall School in Los Angeles, California, whose mission is to “inspire children of diverse backgrounds to fulfill their unlimited, God-given potential,” a mission clearly aligned with my own. I have also had the opportunity this year to coach four different boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at our school, and will soon be starting the volleyball and swim seasons.
My interests include scuba diving, skiing, basketball, hiking, reading C.S. literature, and spending time with my nieces and nephew. It is exciting to be able to reconnect with DiscoveryBound and support the National Leadership Council Program while still being able to teach during the year; it feels like the best of both worlds.
When he was a youngster, Summer enjoyed playing soccer, basketball, football, volleyball, and track. Summer was raised in Christian Science. He left Sunday School in his early teens and did not start his serious study until about 15 years later in 2005. God had been calling him and, like Jonah, he ran the other way. Once is realized his true calling he left all that material life had to offer in search for Christ. Is has been almost 5 years since that special Easter day.
He became involved in DiscoveryBound through answering correspondence as the clerk of his church. He was soon asked to chaperon a National Event in Boston and found his calling to work with the youth. The teens seemed to enjoy him as he has been asked to chaperon on every national event in the last three years.
Summer, along with co-rep April Wilson, took over the San Diego DiscoveryBound Chapter about a year ago and have since planned numerous events from surf-camp outs to restoring trails and gardens with Habitat for Humanity.
Summer loves to sail and hike. He has sailed across the Pacific Ocean and up the coast from mainland Mexico, through the Sea of Cortez, to San Diego. He would like to circumnavigate the globe some day but his study of Christian Science has lead him on a spiritual journey to which he gratefully says, “Not my will, but Thine be done.”
He currently owns a small window cleaning business in Encinitas, California. Soon after he started studying Christian Science he started getting calls from friends and family asking him to pray for them. This inspired him to take class instruction in Christian Science. He now nurtures a part time public practice in Christian Science.
In the last five years Summer has served his church as Clerk, First Reader, Chairman of the Board, Vice Chair, reading room attendant, Sunday School teacher, and librarian of the Joint Reading Room of San Diego. He feels that each step in his life has helped him to gain the humility to understand, even if in small degree, the importance of being a servant-leader.
He looks forward to the next four years as a NLC - S group leader and is sure he will learn as much from the group as they will learn from him!

Who is Amanda? Well… she lives in Georgia. Amanda always aims to achieve the greatest. She gets joy from seeing other people being blessed and happy. She’s a daughter of God and two wonderful parents. Amanda hopes to become a wife and mother someday, while being a renowned marine biologist. Some say creativity runs through her veins, and she replies by saying, “Everyone has creativity, some just use it more than others.” She loves swimming competitively and playing volleyball, and was blessed enough to make the school volleyball team in both grades it was available.
Amanda has been influenced by Mrs. Julie Ward and Mrs. Bonnie Rea (past and present Sunday School teachers), as well as Mother Teresa. These three people have taught her that following God and his example is the most important thing. Amanda has accomplished a number of things, and is very humbled to have done so. They include, being fortunate enough to be chosen as the lead in several school plays, maintaining super honor roll throughout middle school, having the honor of becoming an editor on the school yearbook staff, becoming a member of the school Jr. Beta Club, and becoming a member of both The Mother Church and her local Branch Church. With a very special church, she continues to grow spiritually every single week. Amanda hopes that this growth will continue with the incredible experience of NLC. Amanda will always continue to bless others, and demonstrate Servant Leadership.
My name is Brita and I live in Minnesota. I have one brother in college, my mom works at our local high school and my dad works for a big printing company. Some of my interests are sports and animals. I have tried many different sports starting when I was six. The sports I have played are basketball, soccer, tennis, and gymnastics. I am currently trying Nordic skiing. I would like to keep playing tennis with my friends but I don’t think that I will play competitively. I also play softball. I played slow pitch softball until fifth grade. After that I switched to fast pitch. I have played that every year since then. I played for the high school B team in seventh grade, and I am going to play for school up through my senior year. Sports have always been a part of my life, and I hope to keep playing them for a long time.
Animals are another thing that have always been part of my life. I have a fat cat named Daisy and a small yorkie-poo named Lyla. We also have a family cat name Pebbles. My family got Pebbles when I was two years old. She is an outdoor cat and spends almost all of her time outside in the summer. Living in Minnesota, she isn’t much of a fan of the outdoors in the winter. We got my cat Daisy when I was eight. She is an indoor cat. We were used to an outdoor cat so we fed Daisy like an outdoor cat, but since she didn’t get as much exercise as Pebbles, she got fat. I got Lila when I was in sixth grade. She is a very friendly dog that gives you lots of kisses when you come home. I also had a beta fish that lived for about six years. I love all animals and I want to work with them when I grow up. I also enjoy spending time with my friends. I meet many new friends through the sports I play, and many of them like animals too.
My name is Crystal. I am the youngest child of four in the family. I live in Oregon, where it rains pretty much all the time. On weekends I love to just hang out with my friends or quietly read a book. I like to play tennis, go snowboarding on long weekends, and run track at school in the spring. I love to write, and I'm currently working on a story that has been a long process. In school I play the oboe in band, and outside of school I take guitar lessons. I'm a pretty social person, with a great attitude and usually always laughing. I've got great friends, and I actually don't mind school.
I am a very animal type of person. I am in love with a 15 pound white Persian cat, and her name is Mia. We got her when she was just a kitten, and I had to bottle feed her for several weeks. Sometimes I wish I lived in the country, where I could have more pets to take care of. But the plus side is our family owns a ranch in Northern California, and we try go there to escape the city from time to time. Two horses live there, Buck and Trillapy. It is a really secluded spot with lots of open fields. I love it there.
Some random facts about me are that I collect rings of all kinds. I wear them all the time, and I always want more. I am also really into puzzles, like the Rubik's cube. I taught myself to solve it, and my fastest time at solving it is about 47 seconds. In the future I hope I will be able to help out some fundraiser to help people, and I want to possibly even start my own program like that. But until then I am just very interested in writing, and I hope to be published someday.
Hi, my name is Elizabeth. My life began in New Mexico. Ever since I was a baby I would always be in my CS Church Children’s Room, while my parents were at the service on Wednesday’s and Sunday’s. I wasn’t the only one in the Children’s Room -- I was accompanied by many other baby Christian Scientists. Among them my 2 1/2 year older sister adopted from Russia, Meredith, who is now 15 years old. I was raised by my parents Margie and Jeff. I grew up liking the theatre and when I was six years old I was in the production of the Sound of Music as Gretl. Ever since that I was hooked to the theatre. Before I had been taking dance lessons, and after being in the show I knew I wanted to continue taking dance lessons. Over the years I was in the productions of Annie and Ragtime.
Being in the business of theatre taught me a lot. It taught me you aren’t always going get into what show you want, and that God will have a place for you in the show if you’re the right person for it.
My dog is as happy and jolly as he could be, and we have a crazy Siamese kitten named Cosmo. I am taking lots of dance and voice lessons. I have some wonderful friends who I trust well, and I am attending church every week, and find myself thanking God for a lot of things. I am so grateful and thankful for all I have, and am glad I have a safe and well family, and have parents who love me, and who I love. Now with my life I am ready to take all that I’ve learned and give it back to others!
Hey y’all I’m Emelie. I’m from Texas, but currently live in Missouri. I am half Swedish, have 2 sisters, and I am very close to my family. I love playing sports, especially soccer, basketball, volleyball, and running. I take voice lessons and enjoy learning to play the guitar.
I love hanging out with friends and I am dedicated to my school work as well. I have done quite a bit of international traveling with my family and it is definitely one of my favorite things to do. I really like the beach, any place warm, but at the same time I love skiing in the mountains and I would like to try snowboarding when I get the chance. I also love horseback riding and pick-up trucks. I would like to own a ranch when I grow up.
My name is Isabel and I was born to John and Kristin. I live in Washington State. I have a sister who is 5 years older than me and her name is Natalie. In December of 2001, my family went to New Zealand with a few other close families. We spent a week in Australia as well. In 2002 my father passed on, which was a big loss for my whole family.
In 2003, my family took another trip to Costa Rica, with that same group of families. In 2007, we spent 5 months in Spain, where we lived on the southern coast. On that same trip we visited Germany, the Netherlands and France. November of 2008, our family went down to Nicaragua where we helped out on a service trip. This trip was very eye opening for me, and I saw the poverty side of living. In my eighth grade year, I had the privilege of traveling to the UK for two weeks with a group of my schoolmates. This trip taught me how to handle traveling without my family and to have responsibility with living on my own.
I have played the piano since I was five year old. Also I picked up the ukulele when I was 12, and have begun to play that more often. I had played soccer and swam ever since I could, but when I got to my teens I had moved on from that. In middle school, I tried four new sports that I became fond of: crosscountry running, cross -country skiing, ultimate Frisbee, and bike riding. I am especifically fond of math. I have always liked to work hard and have been organized with my work. I also find myself giving back to the community, whether it is on a trip, or part of a school project, or just volunteering on my own. I have been a part of two volunteer groups: a summer volunteer program where middle school students get together and volunteer for different organizations and the National Charity League, a mother-daughter volunteer organization. I attended Bow-Isle camp three different summers and have cherished my experience there as well. I have loved my Sunday school experience and have been apart of that for as long as I can remember. I have made good friends and loved my teachers as well.
Hi! My name is James. I was born in Oregon in the same house I live in today. The house has 2 stories and I live on the top story ;).
I like to play Monopoly with my sister and I win a lot. I also like to play cards with my friends. Harry Potter is one of my favorite book series and The Lord of the Rings are about my favorite movies. I like the Beatles music. Pasta and pizza are among my favorite foods. I got to go to Disneyland a few weeks back. I really enjoyed Autopia because I got to go racing around in a car.
I love my cats and dog. My dog Martha and I love to play in the snow. My cats Anna and Jack snuggle with me while I sleep or watch a movie. Jack will hook me with his paw if I stop petting him. Anna sometimes likes to ride on my shoulders. Every Sunday I go to church and learn with my Sunday School teacher about God. Every year I like to go to CS camp and Boy Scout camp with the other scouts.
Katherine lives in Texas. She has lots of friends and enjoys having a group of friends over to play capture the flag at her house. Katherine has one sister named Amanda (16) and her two parents Robert and Pamela. She also has one cat named Oliver who is 2 years old and 16 pounds. Her family adopted him when he was 6 weeks old from their local animal shelter. Katherine has always been very active, and has done about every sport there is.
Currently she is involved in Girl Scouts, tennis, and drama. Katherine has earned her Bronze Award in Girl Scouts and is completing her Silver Award. She has participated in Girl Scouts from kindergarten to today. Her Silver Award involved giving backpacks and school supplies to public schools that are still recovering from Hurricane Ike. Katherine and her Girl Scout troop collected a total of over 145 backpacks and a trunk load of school supplies to donate to the schools.
Katherine excels at speaking and writing the Spanish language. She is a very talented artist and likes to express her self through her art. Katherine enjoys making her art different from everyone else’s. She likes to make it stand out. Katherine loves going to Adventure Unlimited Christian Science summer camp. She attended it for four years and participated in the majors of Explorers, Mountaineers, and Challengers twice.
Today Katherine enjoys hanging out with friends, playing tennis and ping-pong, and participating in school plays. Lastly she aspires to be either and Architect, Interior Designer, Actor, or involved in advertising or packaging design.
My name is Logan and I live in Florida. I have many interests including dancing, singing, playing the clarinet, and shopping. In addition, I have been attending the Christian Science Sunday School my whole life. My mom also attended the Christian Science Sunday School her entire life, however my dad did not. I recently became a member of my branch church along with The Mother Church. As part of being a member of my church, I serve on the Usher and Children’s Room committees.
I live with my parents and my 11-year-old brother, Carson. My mom’s mom lives 2 miles away from our house, so in a way, I live with her too. I also get to see my dad’s side of the family 2 or 3 times a year because they all live within a couple hours of us. We have Thanksgiving with my dad’s side of the family, and then in the spring we have a family reunion at a water park. We celebrate Christmas with my mom’s side of the family. I am looking forward to participating in the NLC.
Hi! My name is Maddi. I love dance, particularly ballet, and I take classes and rehearse 5-7 days a week, practically all year round. I’ve been dancing since I could walk. A dance teacher I once had called me a “diaper dancer” meaning I’ve literally danced for forever. When I’m dancing I feel completely free, and I totally lose myself in what I’m doing. When I get to the studio each day, I can forget about everything else that happened that day and just focus on dance.
Besides dance, I go to school, serve on the student council, take piano lessons, play flute, and sing in choir at my school. But most importantly, I go to church, and last fall became a member of the Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts. I’m so excited to be part of the global healing community that the church is. I’m also super excited for NLC, and being part of such a great organization.
My name is Makenna my birthday is January 24. My favorite subjects in middle school were history and my student aid period (I really enjoy helping in the classroom). California is the place I call home. I live with my mom and 3 siblings. Something I’ve always enjoyed is helping people and volunteering whenever I can. I love to sing, act, dance, and paint my nails, but the thing I love most is thinking and figuring people out. I love trying to understand why people do the things they do. I’ve moved 6 times, going from California to Colorado and back to California. I am surrounded by the two most amazing women in the world, my mom and NLC mentor, Deborah. They help me grow and learn so much every day. I am so grateful for them. I am so lucky to have such a loving family.
My name is Mason and I live in Wisconsin. I have three sisters; Hannah, Emma, and Georgia. I also have two English Mastiffs, Benni and Bella. My favorite sport is lacrosse; golf and football are just some of the other sports I play. In lacrosse I play defense. I am extremely musical, I play the piano, trombone, and I sing for the MYC choir. I am also involved in musical/theater plays, over the past years I have been in many operas and plays.
During the summer my whole family and I go to Cedars Camps. Cedars is a Christian Science camp. At Cedars, I have enjoyed main camp, wrangling, and lately, my sister Emma and I participate in musical theater (MT). I enjoy camp so much for many reasons. I am surrounded by Christian Scientists my age who want to grow spiritually and to recognize the Truth all around us. I believe the NLC will support the same experience as I feel at camp, which is why I am looking forward to participating in the National Leadership Council.
Hi my name is Megan. I live in Massachusetts. I am an avid participator in many sports such as basketball (Travel, AAU, and Stoyac), flag football, and softball. In softball I play shortstop, in basketball my position is guard and forward, and in flag football I am the quarterback. In high school I hope to be a team captain which will help develop leadership skills. This would be hard work, but worth it! Things that I am interested in when not playing sports or doing school work are: collecting sports cards (I have over 5,000), skateboarding, biking, hanging with friends, taking pictures (photography), listening to music, skiing, and swimming. I shop at American Eagle, Bob’s, Kohl’s, and Delia’s. Sport’s teams that I like are Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Revolution. I love to travel and I have been to 26 out of 50 states but always looking for more adventures! I have two brothers, Nick and Zach, and my parents names are Lori and Oliver. We have a Golden Retriever named Dolly that I love with all my heart. My family means the world to me and I could not ask for more!! Ever since I was a little girl I had ONE dream, it is to be in the WNBA.
I am outgoing, adventurous, funny, inclusive, friendly, and a team player. I love attending DiscoveryBound events and our local DB chapter is very active. The Christian Science camps that I have been to are A/U and Cedars. One thing I enjoy about these activities is the loving environment. I like to take what I learned at these activities and express them at home, at school, or wherever I go. Almost every night after dinner my family and I read a section of the lesson which helps us throughout the week.
My name is Nathan. I live in Massachusetts. I work hard in school and get A’s, and highest grades in behavior and effort. I have an older brother, Colby, who is part of the NLC Class of 2012. My younger sister, Lily, is 11. I joined the Mother Church when I was 12. I like to play sports, hang out with friends, and read books. My favorite sports are basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and golf. Snowboarding is something I love to do every winter. Every summer I go to a CS Camp. Past summers I caddied at a local golf course most days that I wasn't at camp. In the fall and spring I referee travel soccer games. For the past 5 summers I have gone to Camp Owatonna. Before that, when my family lived in Atlanta, GA, I went to
Cedars Camps. At Owatonna, I won a black tuft, an award given for outstanding athleticism and leadership on the field, and recognizing that your ability comes from God. My friends would say I am smart, hard-working, and a good leader. I also have a good sense of humor.
My name is Noah. I live in Ohio. My family members are my sister, Molly, my mother Tami and my father, Don. Molly is a junior at The Ohio State University, majoring in Early Childhood Education. My dad is a financial advisor and my mom is a music teacher. We have two cats, Oreo and Cookie.
I play the trumpet in the Symphonic Band. I used to be on a swim team but I am now a golfer and enjoy it very much. Although I have just taken up the sport and have a long way to go, I am making fast progress and hope at one point to be very good at it. I also am extremely interested in art and have taken classes at the Columbus College of Art and Design. I am a Boy Scout, currently at Star rank, and hope to have my Eagle soon. This past summer I was chosen to join the Order of the Arrow which is the Boy Scout honor society. The summer before that, I attended Crystal Lake camp. I attend Sunday School and learning more about Christian Science is one of my priorities. It interests me because of the questions I am able to ask and get answered.
Hi, my name is Robert and I live in North Carolina with my older brother, older sister, my parents, and my cat Bennett. Since we live right outside of our states capital, there are lots of recreational activities to do. I love to play soccer and that’s the only sport that I have played with a team. Meanwhile, I love to play all sports like football, basketball, etc. In school, I enjoy science class the most because I do well in it and my teacher is very fun and cool. When I’m not at school or soccer you can find me hanging out with friends, working with Boy Scouts, watching T.V., or traveling with my family. I attend church as much as possible and have gone to A/U for 4 years. I would like to go to a good college when I grow up and after that become a professional soccer player.
My full name is Nur Sampurno but I like to be called Sam. I live in California with my parents and pet rabbit, Bonnie. I also have an older sister but she moved out to college a couple of years ago. I have gone to Sunday School for as long as I can remember. Even though I don’t eat that much I do like good food especially Italian, Chinese, and Thai. I play the piano and the French horn and I am pretty good at the ocarina.
My parents had asked my then 5 year old sister if she wanted a puppy or a brother. She asked for a brother. I was born on January 30th. As a preschooler I attended a nursery school which was totally outside except on rainy days. We did all kinds of activities outside from playing in the creek to learning about salamanders and banana slugs, but everything was associated with nature. So as I grew older, I appreciated nature more than my peers and I still do. In grade school I developed a love for reading, and with it came a knack for writing. In first grade, I won an award for a book that I had written and illustrated in the Reading Rainbow young writers and illustrators contest. In second grade I began taking piano lessons. I currently enjoy writing my own music. It wasn't until 6th grade that I started to play the French horn and because now I am first chair, I have all of the challenging parts. I am very familiar with traveling and different cultures. My family usually leaves the country at least once or twice a year. Even now I am emailing you from Indonesia.
My name is Sapphire. I strive to be a responsible and caring leader. I value Christian Science, education and strong leadership skills. I have confidence that I can pursue my dreams to help improve the world through service projects and worthy causes that help those in need.
I plan to attend high school and college. During high school, I plan to achieve my goals of becoming a leader in the school council and other programs that promote strong leadership qualities. When work is assigned to me, I do my very best. If I am not proficient in an area, I work hard to improve the part that challenges me. Regardless of whether my grade depends on it, I will go the extra mile to fully understand a subject.
If I am chosen to be one of the members of the NLC, I will show my excellent leadership skills through programs provided by this amazing course. I value the standards set by this organization and am willing to have those standards be the guide for the rest of my life. I attend Sunday School weekly. I am a member of my local branch church and the Mother Church. I help in the process of attendees becoming members, volunteer in the Childrens' Room or usher on Wednesdays.
Who I am… I am present, past, and future all right now.
I am a lover of chocolate and all things creative. I love the powerful feeling of accomplishment with something I and/or others have done. Quietness when I talk with God. Holding sleeping children. Getting lost behind the cover of a book and really feeling like I am in it. The gentleness of the lapping waves against the sand. Clear blue water. Summer heat. Autumn leaves. Winter snow. Spring flowers. My family. A peaceful sleep. The good feeling after I have helped someone. Candles. The rush of a roller coaster. Moving. Floating. Dreaming of fantasy in another world. Traveling. Learning new things. Playing with my little brothers in the snow. Playing with my brothers anywhere. Getting compliments. Creating art that I feel expresses myself. The feeling I get after I go to church. Listening to music. Laughing with my friends. Crying in a good movie. The feeling of ease. I love Love. I love life as Life. I love God. I love me.
