I am originally from Toronto, Ontario, but home is a somewhat transient term for me. Following a brief stint in England, I spent my childhood in New Zealand - an incredible and beautiful country. My family moved to Seattle in time for middle and high school, and I graduated from the University of Victoria (in British Columbia) with a degree in English Literature. While a piece of my heart remains in the South Pacific, I have a definite affinity for all things Northwest/West Coast/Canadian! Like my 2016E co-leader Steve, I am recently a Colorado resident, and I love Denver’s sunshine and proximity to the mountains! Unlike Steve, I don’t express quite the same skillset on the basketball court or soccer field, but I enjoyed rowing on the crew team during college. I also love to run, dance, scuba dive, hike, ski, and travel to new places. ‘Home’ for me is anywhere on a beach, and Bowen Island, where I attended Camp Bow-Isle for many years. My original exposure to NLC was watching my younger sister participate in the program, and I was so moved and impressed by her expanded self-confidence, deepened humility, eloquent public-speaking skills, and the sense of brotherhood and sisterhood that was felt among her NLC classmates. I became the NLC Program Coordinator in March, which means I get to think about NLC everyday!
I am originally from New Hampshire, but grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I graduated from Northwood University with a degree in Advertising/Marketing Management, but the real highlight of college was playing on the Division II soccer team. I enjoy anything that involves being active and outdoors, and am always up for an adventure. ‘Home’ for me is Northern Michigan, where I’ve been attending Camp Leelanau for many years. More recently, I’ve enjoyed working as a counselor at the Leelanau Outdoor Center, which runs outdoor education programs for students in Michigan. This fall I moved to Colorado, and I’m enjoying my first real ski season! I’m attracted to the NLC program because I am a big advocate for personal character development, spiritual growth, and having fun!
2016E Class Members:
My name is Anne. I enjoy playing various types of sports but I am most interested in gymnastics and cheerleading. I am very passionate about cheerleading and my goal is to hopefully be a college cheerleader! I also enjoy going down to my beach house in Naples, Florida. I love going down there because of the scenery and the beautiful beaches. I do not travel much but I know NLC would give me the opportunity to visit many new places.
I have a very loving and encouraging family. I always feel the happiness every time I walk into my house. I have 2 siblings, a brother and a sister, that I love and care for so very much. I think of my siblings as very close friends. We always are laughing and having a great time. My parents are also a great part of my life. They always help and support me throughout my daily routine. In my house the world revolves around Coco, my dog. She is a sweet little innocent 5-pound Chihuahua, Yorkie mix (Chorkie). During my summer, I spend time at Cedars Camps up in Lebanon, Missouri. I love Cedars because it is my home away from home and I enjoy seeing everyone’s smiling face everyday. I have a lot of friends at Cedars because we can all connect together through Christian Science. Christian Science has been a big part of my life and I look forward to growing more spiritually in the future.
I am Ava – a creative, caring, intelligent, bubbly, and compassionate child of God. I always strive to make people happy, and I am very optimistic. I play the clarinet in marching and concert band. I have a passion for music. I am also a member of art club, and German club in which I serve as the secretary. I am very studious and enjoy school, so I maintain a 4.0 average and I am a member of Distinguished Honor Roll.
I live with my mom, dad, and sister, Paige, who is 12. My whole family is very supportive and we love spending time with each other. We are all devoted students of Christian Science and use it in our daily lives. In addition, I have attended Christian Science Sunday school all my life and I am very active in my church. I am very passionate about expressing love and being the example that Jesus showed us. I am looking forward to participating in NLC and sharing my love of Christian Science with others!
Hi, my name is Brittany. I enjoy hanging out with my friends, playing volleyball, basketball, tennis, surfing with my dad, scuba diving with my family and reading. This year I am being home schooled by my parents so we can have the opportunity to travel more; we just came back from two trips, to Guyana, South America, and to Europe. In addition to playing sports and piano, I enjoy studying English and math.
Hi, I am Carson. One thing that I love to do is to play soccer with my friends and teammates. I play on a town team and my school team. I also love to sing in the chorus at my school as well as taking piano lessons.
I have very close friends who are home schooled although I am not. In school I enjoy math and science and writing poetry. While these are the things I enjoy doing, I think what also describes me are the qualities I express and moments I appreciate…a few of which are the love of family and friends, the trust in relying on God, learning about who I am as a child of Divine Love, the excitement of water and snow skiing, the intensity of rock climbing, the calm of ocean views and brilliance of mountain views, the laughter that comes with playing with dogs, the feeling of soft blankets and cozy pillows after being in shorts in the winter, summer camp, and s’mores around the fire, as well as jumping into fresh piles of leaves and the thrill of the chill while jumping into freshly melted rivers and lakes. As is said in The Sound of Music, “these are a few of my favorite things.”
I am very involved in the arts. Since the age of four, I’ve been playing piano, and after that came bass, percussion, and voice. These instruments, in addition to theater, have been my avenue through which I express all of my God-given talents and qualities. Over the years, I have had lots of fun when participating in CS events relating to music, including the most recent Discovery Bound “Focus on Music” in Seattle.
At school, I am in an honors program called “International Baccalaureate,” or IB. In this program, my teachers constantly challenge me and in turn I learn a lot. I balance out my school and arts-related activities with some outdoor action like bike riding and frisbee throwing. No matter what I’m doing at any given moment, I always try to approach situations with an uplifted, spiritual thought, and have a lot of fun in the process!
My name is Chloe. I live with my mom, dad, sister, grandma, and two cats. I play the violin in an orchestra at my performing arts school. I am taking two high school credit classes, French and math. Math is my overall favorite subject. I am not on any sports teams but I like to hike, rock climb, ice skate, canoe, kayak, swim, play badminton, and run. Over the summer I went to the A/U. Ranches and had the experience of peaking my first mountain, which was very challenging but exhilarating.
I also like to draw, play and listen to music, sing, take pictures, and cook. I have been playing the violin for seven years now and work very hard at it. I also used to sing in the choir at school. A few years ago I sang in two Bible based musicals with my mom and sister. The musicals helped raise money for a local charity.
Hi, my name is Dani. I love being outdoors, playing soccer, and competing in dance. During my free time I like playing kickball and capture the flag with my neighborhood friends and just hanging out. Even though math and science are tough, I still love learning about them. One of my goals is to become a stronger Christian Scientist. My goal in being a member of the 2016 National Leadership Council is to become a better leader. Eventually I would really like to join the military and put my leadership skills to practice.
I am an energetic, smiley person. I’m always ready to help solve problems or join in fun. I love sports, and being outdoors. Competitive swimming, art, and music are a big part of my life. I have been swimming for as long as I can remember and love how relaxed it makes me feel. Christian Science thinking helps me keep that relaxed feeling even in meets that might be stressful. I love art and music. I began piano lessons at age 3, still take them, and have added voice lessons. I am in my school’s honors choir. Music lets me express how I’m feeling. I also take art classes, and am developing skills in painting, photography, and design.
I attend Christian Science Sunday School regularly. For six years, I have gone to A/U camp in Colorado. Going back every summer is like coming home. I’ve fallen in love with the scenery and people there. I love the fact that I can always look up my friends from camp when I am dealing with a problem back home, even if they live on the other side of the country.
Hi, I’m Emily! I’m in eighth grade. For the last couple years, I’ve attended public school for a couple classes like choir (where I realized I love to sing), science, and P.E., but I’m mostly home schooled. I am on the high school swim team though and my favorite stroke is butterfly. I’m hoping to take voice and tap dancing lessons as well as try out for some plays.
I like taking walks with my family in the woods that surround our house and explore nature. I’m so grateful to be able to live so close to family – I actually live right next door to my grandma and her puppy. My love of life and of God was widened this summer when I got the opportunity to spend two weeks out at the A/U camps. I had a blast getting to know myself and Christian Science through hikes, climbs, and in peaking a mountain. The most cherished parts of my life are my family, school, swimming, and experiences where I see God’s power.
Hi, my name is Emma. I live with my mom and our three pets: my dog Biscuit, my mom’s dog Miso and our lovable cat Chai. I love school, and I like to learn and try new things. Some of my favorite things to do are reading, cooking, and being in nature. I like to go on long walks with our dogs in the woods, where I feel inspired by the clear examples of nature’s beauty. A new thing I am exploring is ballroom dancing, and I am already very passionate about it. Ballroom dancing is a way that you develop a strong sense of your oneness with Love. It requires a strong, trusting partnership, the strongest of which is our connection to Truth.
Summer camp is very important to me, and I go every year. I really grow mentally as a Christian Scientist when I am at camp, and I know that joining the NLC will help me grow even more. Besides having the opportunity to participate in fun activities like horseback riding, silversmithing, survival studies and arts and crafts, I really cherish making close friends at my camp. This is why I am very excited to have the chance to be a part of the NLC- it will be like a year-round camp experience! The support, joy and friendship that we can gain through this program are invaluable.
Hi, I’m Evan. I have many hobbies: I play Magic, (a trading card strategy game) and I am a talented violin player. I use violin to blow off steam sometimes if I had a rough day at school or something like that. I also just like music. I’m also a gamer. I’m not one of those stereotypical gamers who rage all the time and scream into the mic constantly. But I do have my fair share of rages. If I didn’t rage occasionally on Xbox, I wouldn’t be a gamer. But I don’t do it constantly. I am in a strategy and tactics club at school. Right now we are playing Axis and Allies, a World War II strategy game. It’s like Risk on steroids.
I also like exploring. There’s a forest behind the Jewel grocery store that I go into occasionally. Climbing, (another thing I love to do) goes hand in hand with that sometimes. I have climbed the rock formations in the Garden of the Gods, the walls at camp, and I climb lots of trees too. I also went caving twice at Cedars. I play Minecraft too. I use Minecraft to express creativity when I have an idea. It needs creativity because it’s a building game. Finally, I try to incorporate humor into everything I do because to me, everything needs a little lighthearted humor. It makes things enjoyable.
Hello, my name is Gabriel. My younger brother and I are homeschooled. I attend Sunday School online with The Mother Church. I am an active member of the Boy Scouts, where I am Senior Patrol Leader of my troop. I enjoy outdoor activities. Recently, I went on a 75-mile canoe trip. I love camping, I have backpacked 1000+ feet elevation differences, and I bike a lot. In the winter I like to cross-country ski and make snow forts.
For fun I like to play the computer game Minecraft, reading, and playing with LEGOs. I've been working on a stop-start animation film in LEGOs, and so far it's going very well. I can't wait to finish it! My friends would tell you that I like telling not-so-funny jokes. Frogs are my favorite animal. Because of that, I'm sure it's no surprise when I tell you I have 5 pet African Dwarf frogs. I am a vegetarian and I am a good cook. In my extra time my mom makes me practice piano and I like to volunteer at the library.
Hi, my name is Hunter. I have been Irish dancing for 6 years, and I am currently competing at the Preliminary Champion level. I also participate in chorus, show choir, and drama club. Of the three, drama club is my favorite, because I enjoy acting and performing.
My favorite colors are hot pink and neon green, but I like any color that is bright. I like solving logic puzzles and watching the cooking channel. I love spending time in the summer with my CS friends at Cedars, where I get to ride one of my favorite horses, Ozark. Beach time with my family is another highlight of my summer.
Hi! My name is Kiersten. I have a mom, a dad, two brothers, a dog, and two cats. I’m involved in cheerleading in my town, which is very successful at the competitions we compete in. We hope to compete at nationals in Florida. I also love riding horses, video making, singing/acting/dancing for fun. I love being with little kids, listening to music, hanging with friends, reading, writing, and swimming, but I am going out of my comfort zone a little by joining the theater production at my school. The play is going to be Fiddler on the Roof.
I like staying active. In High school I plan to stay with cheerleading, and be more active in school activities. I am excited to be involved in such an amazing program, like the NLC. The experience will last a lifetime.
Leadership means courage bravery, hard work, and commitment. When I was little I went with my mom to one of her programs. It was right before Thanksgiving. After the program was over there were other people in the building putting food together into a meal basket. I wanted to help right away because I love to just help people out.
I am an A and B student at school. I have lots of friends but only a few are Christian Scientists and they do not go to my school. My mom takes me to church every week. I always learn something new. I am in many clubs and very involved in my school and community. I am in Boy Scouts and I help people in my troop finish their Eagle Scout projects. I am also in a student advisory council at my school.
Hello, my name is Mallory and I am in 8th grade at my local middle school. My favorite class is French. This year I made the school play, “Bye Bye Birdie.” Play practice is hard work but a lot of fun. My favorite activities are soccer, dancing, and singing. I love riding horses too. I help plan and host parties for my local DiscoveryBound group. I enjoy traveling and trying new things so long as they aren’t completely or outrageously crazy. There are many places I have lived and traveled to such as Germany, where I was born, Italy, Alaska, D.C., and many other states and places. I like to be outdoors and I read lots of books. In this program I hope to improve my leadership skills and bring new ideas to the NLC, and continue my path in Christian Science.
Hi! My name is Olivia. Let me tell you a little about myself. I have many hobbies: dancing, playing the piano, running, and camping. Reading and cuddling my bird are my favorite things to do. I have straight A’s in all my classes because I’m hardworking and I strive for perfection. A sense of optimism is present in whatever I do, and I always help others in need. Teamwork and problem solving are easy and fun for me because I am kind, funny, persevering, and I see myself as a leader. Therefore, I connect with other people easily, and I value their ideas.
I try to turn to and rely on God in difficult times. In the November 7 Daily Lift by Julie Ward, she asked if we were “leaners” or “lifters”. She meant, do we lift up the others around us, or do we lean on others and have them support us? Like she concluded, I try to be a “lifter” and lift up the people around me while leaning on God to help me.
My name is Risa. I have two parents and a brother Jeffrey. My hobbies include soccer, writing, reading, singing, playing the piano, and composing music. I also enjoy playing Ping-Pong with my family for I love spending time with my family whenever I get the chance. The competition gets pretty intense but I usually just like to hit the ball back and forth with my dad while we try out new spins and tricks.
I have traveled to over 25 national parks in past summer vacations mostly due to my parents’ love of nature and hiking. I have to say I am hooked now. The natural masterpiece that God created and displayed all around us is breathtaking. I would recommend Zion, Yellowstone (look beyond Old Faithful), Sequoia, Redwoods, and possibly Yosemite (it gets a little crowded). I learned to waterski and wake board at Camp Newfound last year in the three days allotted (lots of fun), and enjoy making many short films with my brother. I have a passion for poetry, and enjoy writing short stories. Twice I have used my poems as lyrics in the songs that I write.
I aspire to become a teacher when I grow up, preferably in math. I enjoy assisting others in learning new skills that will take them far. One unique thing that people wouldn’t know about me is that I love crafts, in particular, pop-up cards. I find it interesting to discover the engineering behind making the card work and being allowed to use my creative side as well. I admit, I have a bad habit of playing piano songs super-fast for fun (which my mother comments on many times) but usually I try to play them at the correct tempo. I love rollercoasters and other fast games. Running is a great way to express God and I try my hardest to achieve and have a good time. Christian Science helps me push through the error that tries to fog up my path in life of expressing good, God, to keep that firm belief that only good exists.
Growing up in the countryside of the southeastern part of the United States has brought me many life lessons. I live on a farm with four chickens, one lamb, one wolf, a golden retriever, and several cats. The animals are companions to me and bring inspiration for my songwriting. They are always there to listen even when no one else is; God is there too, of course.
I have always loved playing the violin, piano, and guitar. I enjoy singing and playing in a band that corresponds with a television series where my brother and I have lead roles. Aside from my acting and singing, I enjoy sewing, designing clothes, reading, writing short stories, sailing, photography, and traveling with my family.
My Sunday school teacher always reminds me that “All there is to me is God through me.” I believe that singing and songwriting allows me to express God’s ideas in song, and that gives me the greatest joy.
My name is Will and I am in the 8th grade. I like school and playing the trombone in the band. I get good grades in school and am in all advanced classes. There is one other Christian Scientist in my school (besides my younger brother and me).
My favorite thing to do is play baseball and basketball. I have been playing baseball since I was 6. I am a left-handed pitcher and play first base for my travel team. A highlight of my season last year was when my baseball team traveled to Cooperstown, NY for a week-long tournament. There were 102 teams from all over the United States competing at Dreams Park which is near the Baseball Hall of Fame. My team was actually in 1st place for most of the week and ended up with a 16 seed. I am a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, and Atlanta Brave fan. When I’m not at sports practices and games (which is a lot!) I enjoy hanging out with my friends and listening to music.
