Spiritual Foundations
Programs for "kids" of all ages at the Ranches and in the Field are designed to carry out the A/U purpose of helping participants see the effectiveness and practicality of Christian Science. Reliance on God and living Christian Science are the standard.
Ranches
Both the Sky Valley and Round-Up Ranches have special facilities where campers and guests can spend time in quiet study. During all youth camp programs, a journal-listed Christian Science Practioner and Christian Science nurse are on duty to provide any special support needed. Some specific inspirational activities at the Ranches include:
"Alone with Your Thoughts": This A/U camp tradition, which grew out of founder, Cap Andrews' World War II experiences, creates
the time and space for solitude in which to enjoy your surroundings, think, pray, write and refine your
ability to respond to God.
Church: One of the most beautiful chapels in the world overlooks the Arkansas River valley from Round-Up Ranch. The Chapel of a Thousand Windows, dedicated to A/U's co-founder, Marianne Andrews, is an incredible place to share in the spirit of church and experience healing.
Flag
Retreat and Flag Raising: Each morning and evening
you'll have the time at flag raising and flag retreat to share
with the camp community experiences and ideas that have brought
spiritual meaning to your day.
Hymn Sings: Hymns are a blessed way to comfort yourself and express gratitude. At our hymn sings you'll have the opportunity to sing and glorify God.
Inspirational
Sharing: Besides beginning every day with inspirational
study, we also begin our activities with campers and counselors
sharing inspirational thoughts and ideas appropriate to the
event.
Metaphysical Theme: Each year we have an inspirational theme we use to guide every aspect of Adventure Unlimited's program and activities.
Morning Lesson
Study: With others in your cabin each morning, you'll
have the opportunity to read the weekly Bible lesson from
the Bible and the Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures,
by Mary Baker Eddy, and let the ideas inspire, strengthen
and prepare you for the day ahead.
Sunday
School: You'll have Sunday School by the lake, with
full classes and experienced teachers. Discussions may include
how to apply the weekly lesson to your life or how to use
your camp experiences to grow in your understanding of Christian
Science.
Sunrise
Lesson Hike: Hike up to an overlook above the camps,
watch the sunrise, and read the lesson in a place that truly
opens "a thousand windows to show us God."
Testimony
Meetings: It's great to get together with your friends
and to share the experiences you've been having that have
deepened your spiritual understanding of God and increased
your appreciation for yourself, others and the natural creation.
DiscoveryBound Chapters
The spiritual foundation and grooming of every Chapter and
field event is what separates DiscoveryBound from most other
teen activities offered in local communities. In our local
activities, as well as regional and national programs, time
is set aside for an inspirational focus. The spiritual elements
of DiscoveryBound's field programs range from inspirational
speakers to small discussion sessions on the application of
Christian Science in our daily lives. They include readings
prepared by teens, practitioner support available for and
during the activities, time for gratitude, hymn sings, and
OTMs (Operation Testimony Meeting; teens attending Wednesday
night services together).
DiscoveryBound weekend programs include a metaphysical theme, which is incorporated into all aspects of the program. These extended activities also include morning lesson study time and Sunday School if the program runs on a Sunday.
Each DiscoveryBound Chapter activity fulfills our purpose of providing "…an atmosphere conducive to the (participant's) recognition of the practicality and effectiveness of Christian Science."
